“Born in the U.S.A. changed my life and gave me my largest audience. It forced me to question the way I presented my music and made me think harder about what I was doing.” - June 4th 1984

rollingstone:

I understand “Born in the U.S.A.” was actually written around the time of Nebraska; do any other songs on the new album date from that period? Actually, half of the Born in the U.S.A. album was recorded at the time of Nebraska. When we initially went in the studio to try to record Nebraska with the band, we recorded the first side of Born in the U.S.A., and the rest of the time I spent tryin’ to come up with the second side – “Bobby Jean,” “My Hometown,” almost all those songs. So if you look at the material, particularly on the first side, it’s actually written very much like Nebraska – the characters and the stories, the style of writing – except it’s just in the rock-band setting.
